About Brocade Silk weaving

A masterful art, brocade weaving with Gold & Silver threads has been an age-old tradition in India. In general, Brocade weaving can be categorized into two distinct styles: Brocades of Pure Silk and Zari Brocades with gold & silver threadwork.

The popularity of Brocade is due to its soft smoothness, luster, shine, grace and sensuous folds that allows exquisite designing.

Silk is the primary raw material for Brocade weaving. Various varieties of raw silk such as Tanduri or Mukta can be used. Most brocade woven with gold & silver threads use the Mukta variety of raw silk as it is able to withstand heavy gold or silver patterns.

Raw silk goes through an elaborate refining process that must be done carefully to avoid any damage to the soft and delicate silk fibers. Color synchronization plays an important part in brocade weaving.

Creating elaborate designs is a specialist's art - the designers or nakshabandhs leverage their skill & imagination to create designs that draw their inspiration from nature, legends or symbolism. Skilled weavers then interpret these designs drawn on paper to actually weave them into exquisite fabric.
