About Aari
The "Aari" embroidery technique has its origins to the Mughal period in the Indian history. The word "Aari" is a derivative of "Aar" or needle.
The fabric is stretched on a frame and the pattern is traced on this stretched fabric. This technique uses a needle with a hooked end. Gold or Silver Zari threads or silk threads are used for the embroidery. The needle pierces the fabric from the top while the thread is tautly held under the fabric. The needle hook picks up the thread and on its upward motion & pulls the thread along with through the fabric in a loop. With expertise, these loops can be extremely intricate leading to very fine & intricate embroidery. After the pattern has been embroidered, the Gold or Silver Zari thread is beaten with a wood mallet to make the embroidery flush with the fabric.
Several artisans work on a single fabric at the same time - this ensures that larger patterns that could normally take a month are finished in days.
