About Bandhani
Bandhani or "Bandhej" is an intricate and very time-consuming process of selective dyeing of fabric and is believed to have originated over 3000 years ago!
Practiced almost exclusively by artisans in western India, the process involves folding the fabric (usually cotton or silk) several times and marking out a dotted design or pattern. The artisan then pulls the fabric at the dotted positions and knots them. A single fabric usually has several thousans knots. When dyed, the entire fabric except the knots are dyed.
The folds of the fabric are the pulled apart in a specific manner that unknots the several thousand knots. The resulting pattern in the dyed fabric with undyed dots forming the pattern.
Expert artrisans can create extremely complex patterns, though these take several days.
